Cloudland

Anu Kirk Pere Ubu tries to sell out and make a hit record. They fail, but look good doing it, and produce some unexpectedly lovely, yearning bits alongside some pop goofiness.

Brian Condra As a kid I discovered the Velvet Underground and from there I went walking in among the thistles and the weeds. Along the way I happened upon Pere Ubu, and have been listening to them ever since. Cloudland isn't their best album, although it is their most accessible. My 13 year old daughter recently heard Waiting For Mary and loved it. She is currently finding, like her dad once did, that the most beautiful flowers grow in the wildest of places.

dfreek Grrreat album! One that I can still sing along to all these years later. David Thomas paid me $1 once while touring for the Worlds in Collision album in Dallas when I requested them to play “Ice Cream Truck” because they didn’t want to/ couldn’t play it.

Ryan Shaffer This album is so fucking wonderful, a weird pop gem that should have been WAY more known than it is. There's no reason for some of these songs to have not been radio hits.

about

With Pere Ubu on hiatus since 1982’s excellent ‘Song Of The Bailing Man’, David Thomas had recorded a` much-praised solo album and the band had now signed to a major label. In a period of rampant world commercialism, what would happen next?

Another crucial era for the band unraveled, Pere Ubu’s journey charted new undulating territory and so began a three-album escapade that retooled our understanding of what pop music is.

Things were further obscured with ‘Cloudland’ when they released “their industrial strength equivalent of a class Beach Boys album from musicians more familiar with factories than surf.” (Greg Kot, Chicago Sun Times).

The Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled in August 1975 to be the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in worldwide. ... more
